India is strengthening its strategic relationship with Oman at a time when instability in West Asia is creating new challenges for international energy security and maritime trade.
The two countries held the 15th India–Oman Strategic Consultative Group meeting in New Delhi on October 7, 2026.
The discussions covered several important areas, including trade, investment, defence, energy, maritime security and regional developments.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership.
Why is Oman important to India?
Oman occupies an important geographical position along the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.
It overlooks strategically significant maritime routes connecting the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
Its geographical position makes it particularly important in the context of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait is one of the world's most important energy transportation routes.
Any serious disruption could affect global oil supplies and create economic difficulties for energy-importing countries such as India.
Defence and maritime cooperation
India and Oman have developed defence relationships involving military exchanges, naval cooperation and joint exercises.
Oman's geographical location also makes maritime cooperation important for both countries.
The Port of Duqm is particularly significant because it offers opportunities for maritime logistics and regional connectivity.
India has also developed closer engagement with Oman through its broader Indian Ocean and Gulf cooperation strategy.
Economic and energy cooperation
The two countries are also working to strengthen trade and investment relations.
An important element is the India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
The agreement is intended to improve economic cooperation and create opportunities for businesses in both countries.
